Google Home Unlocks Powerful Automation and Nest Cam Enhancements for All Users
After months of refinement in early access, Google Home is now rolling out a substantial update that dramatically expands its automation capabilities and introduces meaningful improvements to Nest Cam features. These upgrades are available to every user starting this week, marking a significant milestone for the platform's evolution into a more intelligent and responsive smart home hub.
Major Automation Expansion
New Trigger and Condition Options
The automation engine now supports a broader set of triggers, including device state changes, sensor readings (like motion or temperature), and time-based events. Users can combine multiple triggers with logical AND/OR operators and apply conditions such as home/away status or specific time windows. This allows for highly customizable routines that adapt to real-world scenarios.

- Device states: lights, switches, locks, and more
- Sensors: motion, contact, temperature, humidity
- Time conditions: sunrise/sunset, specific times, or intervals
Advanced Actions and Routines
Automations can now execute sequences of actions across multiple devices, with support for delays and loops. For example, you can create a morning routine that gradually brightens lights over 15 minutes, plays the latest news headlines on a smart speaker, and adjusts the thermostat — all triggered by a single command or sensor event. The expanded automation tools also enable nested conditions and variable actions, giving power users fine-grained control.
- Sequential actions: define order and timing
- Conditional logic: if-then-else branches
- Loop support: repeat actions a set number of times
Nest Cam Upgrades for All
Smarter Event Detection
Nest Cam users will benefit from enhanced object recognition, now capable of identifying persons, animals, vehicles, and packages with greater accuracy. Notifications are more precise and can be filtered by zone and event type. Customizable alert settings reduce false alarms and focus on what matters most.

- Person detection: distinguishes familiar faces (with Nest Aware)
- Package detection: alerts when a delivery arrives
- Activity zones: define areas of interest
Enhanced Privacy Controls
New privacy features give users more control over camera behavior. You can set schedules to automatically disable or enable cameras, and define privacy zones that are excluded from recording. Storage options have also been improved, with easier management of event-based and continuous recording clips.
Note: Some advanced features, like continuous recording and familiar face detection, require a Nest Aware subscription.
Rollout and Availability
The update is being delivered to all Google Home users via the app and firmware updates over the next few days. No additional subscriptions are needed for the core automation expansion and basic Nest Cam improvements. For existing users, the new options will appear automatically after the update.
This release solidifies Google Home as a more capable and flexible smart home platform, offering both beginners and experienced users new ways to automate their environment while strengthening security camera functionality. As the ecosystem continues to evolve, this update sets the stage for even more advanced integrations in the future.
