Apple Ships Safari Technology Preview 241 with Major Accessibility Overhauls and CSS Enhancements

Apple today released Safari Technology Preview 241, a new test version of its web browser engineered for developers and early adopters. The update delivers a suite of critical bug fixes, particularly for accessibility, alongside expanded CSS capabilities.

"We've addressed several high-impact issues that directly affect users of screen readers and other assistive technologies," said a WebKit engineer speaking on condition of anonymity. "The combobox focus forwarding fix, for example, ensures that interactive list items become usable via voice commands or keyboard navigation."

Accessibility Fixes Lead the Charge

The release resolves four significant accessibility bugs. One fix prevents speechSynthesis.cancel() from accidentally removing queued speech utterances, which could interrupt screen reader output. Another corrects bounding box calculations for MathML tables, improving spatial perception for blind users.

Perhaps most notably, comboboxes now correctly forward focus to their aria-activedescendant element. This change enables assistive technologies to interact with dropdown list items as expected. Additionally, the aria-owns attribute is now respected when computing accessible names from element content.

CSS and Rendering Improvements

On the styling front, Safari Technology Preview 241 introduces stable support for CSS scroll anchoring, preventing disruptive page jumps when content loads dynamically. It also adds the stretch keyword to box sizing properties, giving developers more control over element dimensions.

Several rendering glitches have been squashed. The browser now correctly renders the U+2028 LINE SEPARATOR as a forced line break, fixes outline-offset inflation on macOS, and ensures font-family serialization preserves quotes around reserved family names.

Other notable fixes include resolving an issue where certain fonts were unnecessarily downloaded despite no matching characters in the document, and correcting a bug that prevented flex items with percentage-height images from shrinking properly.

"The contain: layout performance fix is a big win for complex web apps," added the WebKit engineer. "It reduces forced layout times when siblings create formatting contexts, which can significantly speed up page rendering."

View Transitions and Color Handling

Developers working with View Transitions will appreciate the correction of a color space bug: snapshots are no longer incorrectly stored in sRGB, which caused rendering errors with non-sRGB colors. The browser also now correctly repaints composited iframes when the color-scheme property changes, and fixes a dark mode issue where color: initial resolved to the wrong color.

Additional fixes cover nested popover elements with position: absolute, elements with display: contents and anchor-scope, and a regression in media query resolution.

Background

Safari Technology Preview is Apple's experimental browser version, updated approximately every two weeks. It allows developers to test upcoming WebKit features and provide feedback before they reach the stable Safari release. The preview is available for macOS Tahoe and macOS Sequoia, and can be updated via System Settings under General > Software Update.

This release incorporates WebKit changes from revision 309287 to 310186, representing roughly 899 commits over the development period.
