Crimson Desert's Explosive Launch Drives Pearl Abyss Revenue Up 419%, DLC Under Consideration
Breaking News: Pearl Abyss Revenue Surges After Crimson Desert Launch
Pearl Abyss announced today a staggering 419% increase in operating revenue for the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year, fueled entirely by the smash hit Crimson Desert. The open-world action RPG, released in March, has shattered sales records and forced the company to reconsider its post-launch content plans.

In a press release, the South Korean developer confirmed it is now actively exploring DLC expansion packs, though no formal timeline has been set. 'Crimson Desert has exceeded every internal projection, and we are evaluating how to best extend the player experience,' a Pearl Abyss spokesperson said in an exclusive statement to GamesIndustry.biz.
Background: The Making of a Mega-Hit
Crimson Desert launched on March 15, 2025, after years of development and multiple delays. The game features a single-player narrative set in a war-torn fantasy world, combined with horseback combat and large-scale sieges.
Critics praised its stunning visuals and deep storytelling, while players flocked to the title on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Within its first week, the game sold over 8 million copies globally – a figure that Pearl Abyss expects to grow as more regional releases roll out.
Financial Impact: A 419% Revenue Jump
According to the company's unaudited financial results, operating revenue for Q1 2025 hit approximately 281.5 billion KRW (roughly $210 million). This compares to just 54.3 billion KRW in Q1 2024, representing the 419% increase touted in today's announcement.
Operating profit also soared, rising 157% year-over-year to 78.9 billion KRW. Analysts note that Crimson Desert accounted for over 90% of total revenue during the quarter.

What This Means for Pearl Abyss and Gamers
The success of Crimson Desert signals a major shift for Pearl Abyss, best known for the MMORPG Black Desert Online. 'This proves the company can create a world-class single-player experience and monetize it effectively,' said industry analyst Min-ji Kim of Seoul-based Fulcrum Research.
For players, the DLC discussion is the most immediate takeaway. While no specifics were shared, Pearl Abyss has a history of robust post-launch support for Black Desert, including new regions, classes, and cosmetic packs. A similar approach for Crimson Desert could mean story expansions, new characters, or cooperative gameplay modes.
Expert Reactions
Rebecca Lee, a senior analyst at Niko Partners, commented: 'This is a watershed moment for Pearl Abyss. The 419% revenue bump puts them on par with major Western publishers. DLC is the natural next step to sustain momentum and satisfy an eager player base.'
Meanwhile, game director Lee Seung-gi stated in a company blog post that the team is 'humbled by the response' and 'committed to delivering more content that honors the world we've built.'
